It is no secret that war strains the mental stability of an individual. According to a Financial Times’ article on May 30, 2008, a record 115 cases of military suicides were reported in 2007. One-hundred and two cases were reported just last year. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is real. And the fact that tour lengths have been reduced from 15 to 12 months did little to decrease suicide rates. I spent Memorial Day weekend in Central Park–laying and drinking wine with friends, taking advantage of the warm weather to wander the city, sit outdoors at bars, and sleep in late. Dear Linz,
Today, we marched to Fisher’s Memorial service. The formation was our first in a month. It felt a little weird. First Sergeant called my company to attention and it was as if the earth froze. We live in an era when the American government has officially “Declared War!” on drugs, amongst other things such as terror, poverty and other countries. To be more accurate, this is just a conflict punishing illegal drug trafficking and consumption while turning a blind eye to the pushers in private industry that are free to regulate themselves.
