The War Within

Written by: Alwayswrite

It is no secret that war strains the mental stability of an individual. According to a Financial Times’ article on May 30, 2008, a record 115 cases of military suicides were reported in 2007. One-hundred and two cases were reported just last year. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is real. And the fact that tour lengths have been reduced from 15 to 12 months did little to decrease suicide rates. According to the article, the military found “a significant relationship” between suicide attempts and the number of days soldiers were deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. More »

Forward March

Written by: Lag

I spent Memorial Day weekend in Central Park–laying and drinking wine with friends, taking advantage of the warm weather to wander the city, sit outdoors at bars, and sleep in late. I had fleeting thoughts of the sacrifices thousands of soldiers have made to give Americans the freedoms and benefits we have today, but I didn’t think about the meaning of the weekend too much, until one beery night when I happened to meet two members of the US Navy, who were on leave from their ship during New York’s annual Fleet Week. Moment of Silence

Written by: TROUBLMan

Can we please have a moment of silence?/ That’s for my niggaz doin’ years in confinement/ And for my soldiers who passed over, no longer living/ That couldn’t run whenever the reaper came to get ‘em…

Can we please pour out some liquor?/ Symobolizin’, let’s take in time to consider that/ Though our thugs ain’t here, the love is here/ And we gon’ rep ’til slugs kill us here…

In the Future…

Written by: TROUBLMan

future-soldier.jpgIn 1984, “The Terminator” gave us a glimpse into the future, where humans wage battle against more advanced and more lethal cyborg rivals. A concept that seemed so futuristic at the time has actually been around for decades and is closer to actualization than most realize.

According to a 2003 US Joint Forces Command study titled “Unmanned Effects: Taking the Human Out of the Loop,” tactical autonomous combatants, as the report called them, could become the norm by 2025. More »

Poor Production

Written by: Rob Mania

poverty-complex.jpgI want to add a new word to your vocabulary. I was trying to figure out if the Military-Industrial Complex and the Prison-Industrial Complex were the same thing, or a different thing. And it hit me: They are both part of one larger “Industrial Complex.” And that is the “Poverty-Industrial Complex.” More »

Fuck the Troops pt.2

Read Part 1 here.

To many I have just committed an unforgivable sin against God and Country. Apparently, this notion is a betrayal of everything good and honorable about the so-called “Greatest Nation on Earth.”

Patriotism, are you serious? More »

Words From War

Written by: Sgt.Mullins

words-from-war.jpgDear Linz,

Today, we marched to Fisher’s Memorial service. The formation was our first in a month. It felt a little weird. First Sergeant called my company to attention and it was as if the earth froze. The stillness hung, “right face. Forward march.” And so we went… As we marched I watched the back of Sgt. Meyers’ heels. I watched his boots splashing through mud; kicking mud up on the back of his trousers; smashing small rocks further into the Earth. More »

Fib, Fudge, Fabricate…

Written by: TROUBLMan

iran-war.jpgHave you ever considered the assorted “flavors” that lies comes in. Wikipedia has a good article on lying that gives a rundown on various types of falsehoods. According to the article, there are bald-face lies, where a person makes no attempt to hide the fact that he is lying. There’s lying by omission, leaving out important details to deliberately create a misconception. There’s perjury, which is lying under oath in court or in a sworn statement. There’s white lies, bluffing, careful speaking, emergency lies, jocose lies, exaggeration and many more types of falsities that people engage in. More »

There’s a war going on. It’s for our minds. The enemy profits from our ignorance and apathy. We fight back. Our philosophy: question what we’ve been taught, examine society and create a community that teaches and inspires collective action.
